McMurry tops Peace College on South Padre Island, 68-50

Sophomore center Anna Berthel finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks on Friday to lead McMurry to a 68-50 win over Peace College.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – The McMurry women's basketball team kicked off play at the South Padre Island Shootout with a 68-50 win over Peace College (N.C.) Friday afternoon.

Sophomore center Anna Berthel led the way for McMurry as she finished with a team-high 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks.  Senior guard Amber Horton followed Berthel's lead as Horton chipped in with 12 points for McMurry's effort.  The win improves McMurry to 5-2 on the year; meanwhile, Peace College falls to 4-3 with the loss.

“(Anna Berthel) really shut down anything (Peace College) did inside,” McMurry coach Veronica Snow said.  “She stopped them from coming inside on us.  Amber Horton also did a great job defensively as she held their leading scorer to zero points.”

All 15 players on McMurry's roster played in both halves with Horton and Berthel both playing a team-high 23 minutes.  McMurry shot well from the free throw line as they converted 22 of 33 shots from the charity stripe.

McMurry will now have Saturday off before concluding play at the South Padre Island Shootout on Sunday against Bates College.  Tip time is slated for 1 p.m.
